The administration of Bisignano looks with confidence at the 1 euro houses projects, hoping to encourage the recovery of housing and tourist accommodation in its historic centre. The municipal administration of Bisignano is certain that this intervention will help the revitalization of the city, favouring the inclusion of new families and returning new propulsion of life and culture and tourism.
The urban characteristics of the historic centre of Bisignano,a town located on a hill at 350 meters above sea level, are typically medieval – low and adjacent buildings along small narrow and winding streets. It is in the historic centre that the artistic and cultural heritage of Bisignano is concentrated, divided into the 8 districts from the 13th century. The historic centre is dominated by the city’s castle from which you can enjoy a splendid view of the Crati valley. Outside the historic centre, you can visit the Convent of the Reformation built in the 1200s, where you can find treasures of Christian culture, a museum and a library with an adjoining large green area for those who want to spend a day in relaxation and tranquillity.
The history of Bisignano spans a period of about 3,000 years. There are no news or solid evidence of when the first settlement started here, but the numerous archaeological finds (troglodytic dwellings, burial furnishings and weapons) date back to the 15th and 14th centuries BC. The Via Popilia (built in 132 BC), which is located in the current territory of Bisignano, was a meeting point between the Reggio Calabria region and Rome. On the road that pilgrims walked mainly from the 1300s onwards, considerable importance was given to cultural and economic exchanges between the city and the outside world.
The oldest news about Brutia Besidiae, now Bisignano, of which we have evidence, are connected to a battle fought in 205 BC against the Romans and alongside Hannibal. Over the centuries Bisignano was very active in the defence of its autonomy against Rome, giving rise to a fierce struggle to maintain its independence. This tendency was the origin of numerous conflicts with different peoples, who alternated in the government of the city leaving, from time to time, many testimonies and enriching the cultural heritage that is still preserved today.
The eight districts that make it up, are rich in numerous artisan shops always open and active, which testify to the great industriousness of the village and the undoubted artistic value of local artisan production. Bisignano was the birthplace of one of the largest luthier families in the world, the De Bonis, and currently houses workshops of the direct descendants of the family as well as other workshops inspired by the production of internationally renowned stringed instruments. Of particular importance is the tradition of ceramic craftsmen, able to build a unique style, with great artistic and cultural value.
The Palio del Principe is one of the most important events and talked about all over the city. The event is dedicated to the welcome of Emperor Calo V in the 1500s. It took place in the castle of Prince Sanseverino of Bisignano, where he was the host of the celebration. Typical medieval celebrations and tournaments would take place in this period.
