Getting to know Palma di Montechiaro

Palma di Montechiaro stands on a hill not far from the capital city of Agrigento.

This territory was settled as early as the second millennium BC. This is evidenced by the presence of numerous Sican tombs and archaeological finds.

The founding act of the city of Palma bears the date April 25, 1637. The city was built following an ideal orthogonal grid plan. The first inhabitants of Palma came from Ragusa, Agrigento, Licata, Naro and Caltanissetta. There they grew abundant amounts of vines and fruits in their gardens and grounds. Today, Palma di Montechiaro can boast of producing Pistacchio di Raffadali, a variety of Sicilian pistachio with a protected designation of origin (PDO or DOP).

Religious architecture in Palma di Montechiaro

One of the strengths of the development of medieval Palma di Montechiaro were precisely the city’s founders. Palma, in fact, from its foundation was conceived as a strongly spiritual place, a “New Jerusalem.”

Important buildings still standing in the area include the Church of Santa Maria della Luce, a via crucis that depicted Jesus’ journey from Pilate’s palace to Golgotha, and the Ducal Palace, which was transformed into the Benedictine Monastery.

Other examples of Sicilian Baroque are the Mother Church, with the adjoining Oratory of the Blessed Sacrament and the Oratory of the Blessed Rosary. Still worth mentioning are the former convent of the Scolopian Fathers, now the seat of the municipality, with the Church of the Holy Family attached, the Church of St. Angelo, known as the Batiella. Not to be forgotten are the Purgatory Church and the Church of the College of Mary.

The 1 euro houses project in Palma di Montechiaro

The city council passed a resolution in late July 2022 on the municipal regulations for the subsidized transfer of real estate. Thus was born the 1 euro houses project in Palma di Montechiaro.

The administration’s goal is to enhance and revitalize the historic center by encouraging the rehabilitation of properties that are dilapidated or in poor condition. Risks that could result to public safety from the total or partial collapse of dilapidated houses will thus be eliminated.

There is also an intention to encourage new production facilities. Those who want to open tourist-accommodation activities, craft stores and businesses in the historic center, bringing wealth back to the municipal area, will be welcome.

In fact, with this regulation, the city government believes it can incentivize the transfer of a property, by those who intend to dispose of it, by simplifying and streamlining the mediation process between the parties involved in the sale.

More information will be added once the full regulations are published by the Palma di Montechiaro municipality.
