The 1 Euro Houses project available now in Candela- Foggia – Puglia. The municipality of Candela had already tried in 2018 to fight the abandonment of the historic centre, offering 2000.00 euros per family if they move to Candela.
“Let’s recover the historic centre” is the name of their 1 euro houses project in 2021, aiming to combat the depopulation of the town, and the abandonment of buildings that cause security and degradation problems in the small Italian village. The administration of the Apulian town has issued a public notice for the acquisition of old houses. The owners can get rid of dilapidated properties and sell them for the symbolic price of 1 euro to interested new owners. The municipality expects a good turnout, based on the excellent results 1 euro houses projects had in other Italian municipalities.

Get to know Candela
Candela is a small medieval village in Apulia (Puglia) and stands on two hills of San Rocco and San Tommaso, between the River Ofanto and the Carapelle Stream at 500 meters above sea level.
For its position, Candela is particularly attractive to tourists who can enjoy a very wide panoramic horizon. Its fantastic view goes from the massifs to the valleys. When the sun sets over the ancient medieval village of Candela, it takes your breath away.
To enter the heart of the village, you will cross an arch and a mosaic depicting a Candlestick. Walking through the alleys of the historic centre, you arrive at the foot of one of the oldest churches in Candela, dedicated to St. Thomas. The church sports a Romanesque façade with a sail bell tower, which, as the nearby millenary tombstone recalls, was a point of reference for the inhabitants of the village and the populations outside its walls.
There are several religious buildings that can be visited, the castle of Norman origin, and the noble palace of the Doria.
The inhabitants of Candela have historically always the pride in their ability to be a free people. As a small Roman village, Candela became a medieval castle and later a small town, able to take its own initiatives and to establish itself immediately in the economic and social field.
The peculiarity is all enclosed in its character; the typical Candela inhabitant (candelese) is a hospitable, proud, strong, tireless worker, skilled in both commerce and craftsmanship.
Candela’s cuisine is rich in typical Italian Apulian products: orecchiette, arugula with toasted ricotta and Apulian oil which you can taste in the various restaurants and shops of the village.
