Gasperina is a town in the province of Catanzaro overlooking the Ionian Sea. It consists of a historic center, located on a hill about 500 meters above sea level, and some seaside hamlets. The geographical position makes Gasperina particularly suggestive; it is 7 km from the sea and 10 minutes by car from the Calabrian Preserre. Having been under Carthusian jurisdiction for a long time, it still preserves living evidence of this presence.

THE KITCHEN – Gasperinese gastronomy reflects the quality of Calabrian cuisine, based on the Mediterranean diet. First courses include homemade pasta with meat sauce, legume soups enriched with vegetables and pasta with sauce of rolls, meatballs or stockfish. The main courses vary between meat, vegetables and fish, with stockfish a’ troppitara as a typical dish. Potatoes are widely used in different recipes. The processing of pork is widespread, with typical cured meats such as capocollo, sausage and soppressata. The cheeses are mainly derived from sheep’s and goat’s milk, with pecorino and ricotta as the main products. The confectionery tradition is varied and linked to anniversaries, with desserts such as buccunotti, castagnoli and zzìppuli.
