From the 14:40 minute of the Rai 3 Mediterranean program, we can see the example of those who sold and bought houses for 1 euro in this small Sicilian town. The survey, entitled The 1 euro bet, shares the experiences of the municipal administration and the personal stories of those who have moved from abroad. From the United States to Australia, there are those who are willing to change their lives and find refuge in the tranquility of the Italian countryside.

The warmth of Mussomeli

But what are the main benefits indicated by those who bought houses for 1 euro in Mussomeli? Above all, the close and welcoming community of the village. The warmth and welcome of the local citizens initially surprised the newcomers and made them suspicious. Over time, however, strong and authentic bonds have been created. These bonds have instigated many good ideas related to Sicilian culture and food. Today, with the help of the new citizens, the following are available for those visiting Mussomeli:

  • new gastronomic routes,
  • cooking classes for children and adults,
  • other typically Sicilian and local experiences.

Administrative Mussomeli

Mayor Giuseppe Catania and former mayor Totuccio Scannella comment in the survey:

“The goal was to attract foreign capital, aimed at the redevelopment of the historic center and repopulation. Obviously this, with a whole series of benefits, people come and make a contract.”

One of the problems is the cost of renewal. Not all of them fit into the 110% funding scheme.

Things didn’t always go the right way, whether it was the pandemic or bureaucratic difficulties. However, Mussomeli has increased from 380 to about 5000 visitors to the municipality, also interested in houses. In addition to the houses for sale at 1 euro, there are also low-priced houses that are immediately habitable. The prices of the latter are around 15,000 euros. Here, too, some renewal is perhaps needed, but it is not too extensive or necessary.

The success of the houses at 1 euro

The mayor of Catania reiterates: “About 250 deeds of sale to mainly foreign citizens of 18 different nationalities have been concluded.”

In addition, there are also larger capital interests. Investment funds are also investing in Mussomeli real estate, among other things in a noble building that will become a coworking space for those who work remotely.
